Winnipeg's 2026 Municipal Election Priorities: Protect Lake Winnipeg

PROTECT LAKE WINNIPEG AND OUR TAP WATER

Keep our water system safe and healthy.

Winnipeg relies on safe drinking water, but we also count on our rivers and lakes to be clean for canoeing, fishing, and fun. But for decades City Council has been unable to protect our rivers and lakes, with huge sewage dumps directly into the red river. Our water infrastructure is out of capacity, and without investment, Winnipeg’s economy could stall, and we need action now.

This election, Winnipeggers want to ensure we have water and wastewater infrastructure that protects Lake Winnipeg and allows our city to grow into the future. We want investments so sewage isn’t dumped into our rivers and lakes. Clean water for growing city, and a beautiful Lake Winnipeg should be common sense.

The Local Guarantee asks candidates to protect our water. Tell the mayor, council, and municipal election candidates to commit to fund the infrastructure we need, and end sewage dumps. This is an election issue.

WINNIPEG LOCAL GUARANTEE:
We are not just asking for this one fix.

CUPE Local 500 launched the Local Guarantee to bring forward a package deal for Winnipeg: safe water, reliable public services, community safety, and local jobs. These are the real issues in this year’s municipal election.

CUPE Local 500 representing over 5,000 members dedicated to public services, including Winnipeg city workers.
